Afghanistan Women Council has been operating a Mother and Child Health Clinic for Afghan mothers and children since 1986. It was created for Afghan refugees in Peshawar, Pakistan and has now established a clinic in a very remote area of Shahrak e Khrasan, 3.5 KM to the east of Kabul, where about 10,000 families live. Except the AWC clinic, there are no health facilities available for these women. Women in the area are provided with free health services. Our doctors see approximately 70 women and children each day. They do some minor operations, provide maternal and child health education, and family planning. The clinic has two female doctors, two nurses, a lab technician, a pharmacist, a cleaner and a guard.

Objectives:

To improve the health status of Afghan mothers and children in Khurasan Township where about 10,000 families of various tribes live.
To protect mothers from death during childbirth and teach them of their responsibilities regarding their health for themselves and their children. 
To improve children’s health and protect them from malnutrition and various diseases.
To insure that all pregnant mothers and newborn children are vaccinated, to protect them against various kinds of diseases.
To bring environmental awareness to the community along with information on ways to protect it.

The clinic runs the following activities for women and children:

1) Health Education for women.
2)Treatment of about 100 mothers and their children of various illnesses daily..
3) Provide women with family planning information.
4) Provide various vaccinations for mothers and children.
5) Antenatal and postnatal care for women.
6) Laboratory services.
7) Subsidized pharmacy for women.
8) 10 beds for childbirths.
9) Awareness on HIV/AIDs.
